A rare association of Polands syndrome and pneumothorax

Polands syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly, characterized by a partial or complete absence of pectoralis major muscle, absence of minor pectoral muscles, absence or hypoplasia of breasts and/or nipples, absence of ribs in a varying degree, hand abnormalities, and hypoplasia of the subcutaneous tissue. However, its coexistence with pneumothorax is very rare. A 51-year-old male patient was admitted to our emergency department with complaints of progressive chest pain and dyspnea which began a week ago. Physical examination revealed that breath sounds decreased on the right side with an absence of pectoralis major muscle. Plain chest X-ray showed total pneumothorax on the right side. The patient underwent bullectomy and pleural abrasion using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. We present this case to draw attention to the rare association of Polands syndrome with spontaneous pneumothorax.
