Peripheral Artery Injuires and Results of Treatment

From 1980 to 1995 with a diagnosis of peripheral artery injury, 143 cases admitted to Osmangazi University Medical School Department of Cardiovascular surgery. These cases have been respectively reviewed. The causes of injuries were; blunt penetrating injuries in 62 cases (43.3%), trafical accident in 37 cases (25.8%) and gunshot injuries in 13 cases (9%) in 18 cases (12.6%) complete wound lesion in 125 cases (87.4%) partial wound lesion was observed. In 99 cases (69.2%) upper extremity in 44 cases (30.7%) lower extremity was involved. As a surgical procedure, in 69 cases (48.2%) end-to-end anastomosis in 30 cases (20.6%) lateral reperation, in 22 cases (15.4%) venous graft interposition in a cases prosthetic, graft interposition, in 13 cases (9.1%) ligation was performed. In 137 cases (95.8%) extremity was salvaged. In 6 cases (4.1%) amputation was performed. Mortality rate was (2.1%).

In conclusion, peripheral artery injuries seem to be more frequently occur in upper extremities and with early diagnosis, adequate therapy plays important role in salvation of the extremity.
