Morgagni hernia is a rare congenital anomaly. It is seen usually on the right side and in female patients. Surgically repaired cases of Morgagni hernia are reported.

Between 1993 and 1998 four adult cases of Morgagni hernia were seen. All were female with an average age of 60 years (56-65). In diagnosis posteroanterior grid chest roentgenograms, computed tomography of thorax (n=4), barium enema colonography (n=2) were used. All cases were diagnosed before operation. Transabdominal approach was used in all patients.

In all cases transvers colon and omentum were found to be misplaced into thorax through the space of Larrey. Omentum found in thorax was resected and colon was reducted. Diaphragmatic space was sutured with single layer, interrupted mattress sutures using non absorbable material. No morbidity or mortality was seen. Average length of hospitalisation was 7.5 days (6-9). After an average follow-up period of 25.5 months (5-62), no recurrence is seen.

With the improvement in radiologic imaging tecnigises, Morgagni hernia diagnosis has increased. Transabdominal approach should be preferred if diagnosed before the operation.
