Methods: Between November and December 2004; 3779 primary school students were evaluated for chest wall deformities and the associated abnormalities.
Results: As a resault of physical and X-ray examinations, prevalences were found for chest wall deformities, for pectus excavatum, for pectus carinatum, and for costal deformities 0.89%, 0.5%, 0.15%,0.23%, respectively. Family history of chest wall deformity (5.8%), abnormality in ECG (5.8%), cardiac murmur (5.8%), mitral valve prolapse (2.9%), scoliosis (5.8%), syndactyl (2.9%), kyphosis (2.9%), and bronchial asthma (2.9%) were associated with chest wall deformities.
Conclusion: The prevalence of chest wall deformities in the primary school students of Afyon city was 0.89%. Severe deformities were present in only 14.7%.
