The mortality rate of bilateral carotid endarterektomies performed on 74 patients from 1987 to 1992 in the clinic of vascularsurgery of Marienhospital Hamm Germany has been found to be 1.48%.

Although higher in comparison to the unilateral carotid endarterectomies, the mortality and morbidity rates in our study population were still below the ranges that is accepted by the American Heart Association. This shows that bilateral carotid endarterectomy might be safely performed with a careful surgical technique by experienced hands.
