Case Report; Videothoracoscopic Excision of Benign Cystic Teratoma Which Simulating Pleural Effusion

The teratomas are seldom observed in the anterior mediastinum in children and young adults. Same other thoracic lesions Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery - VAST-is a popular procedure in mediastinal masses.

Seventeen years old woman was referred to our clinic with cough, respiratory taken 1000 and 1500 cc fluid. The case was accepted our clinic with undiagnosed pleural effusion. Posteroanterior, lateral thorax radiograms and thoracic tomography were showed pleural effusion in the left side of the thorax. We was performed VATS, observed a cystic lesion that contain sebum and hairs. Frozen-section examination was reported benign. Mass sizes were approximately 15, 15, 20 centimeters. We performed thoracoscopic excision was to it. Any surgical complication did not observed. She discharged at postoperative third day. Late pathologic examination reported benign cystic teratoma. The case is following asymtomatically for eight month.

We report a case of a benign cystic teratoma resected by videothoracoscopy. We believe that procedure has proved to be easy, safe, and advantageous also in the treatment of giant tumors of the mediastinum.
