Surgical Approaches in Thymomas

Myasthenia gravis is the major factor effecting the prognosis in thymomas which are known as anterior mediastinal benign lesions. The retrospective analysis of 47 thymomam cases that have been operated in our department has revealed a high incidence of myasthenia gravis (81%) in whom survival rates were found to be better when compared to nonmyasthenics. Complete resection was also more effective than the incomplete technique in achieving favourable survial rates. Whilst a 67% mortality ratio is known for malignant thymomas, 100% and 92.8% 10 year survival rate in grade 1 and 2 patients have clearly demonstrated the role of tumor staging in pronnostic evaluation.
