Between January 1987 and June 1994, 38 cases with tuberculous empyema were treated in Heybeliada Chest Disease and Surgery Center. In 2 cases tube thoracostomy, in 23 cases decortication, in 8 cases decortication + resection were performed and 1 case was cured by thoracoscopic debridmen. Because of pulmonary lesions and limited pulmonary functions, more paliative surgical procedures like myoplasty (n: 3) and thoracoplasty (n: 1)

We think that good results can be obtained in tuberculous empyema in which diagnosis and treatment is more difficult than nonspesific empyema, by correct treatment procedure and timing for operation.
