Aspergilloma is diagnosed in the etiology of some
patients who are treated in thoracic surgery clinics
because of haemoptysis. It is an opportunistic infections developing on the basis of a chronic infection
mainly tuberculosis. Twentysix aspergilloma cases
were operated at Yedikule Chest Surgery Centre
1., 2., and 3. Surgical Clinics between 1988-1998. Five
were women and 21 male with a mean age of 41,5
(17-59). Twentytwo tuberculosis (84,6%), 1 emphysematous lung, 1 hydatid disease, 1 operated hydatid disease and 1 lung cancer were detected in the etiology. In 9 cases sputum examination, and serologic
tests, in 2 postbronchoscopic lavage and in 10 cases
transthoracic needle aspiration supported the diagnosis of aspergilloma. In 22 patients abnormal radiology was present. The diagnosis was made only after
postoperative pathologic examination in 4 cases. The
mortality was 3,8% and morbidity 23% in patients of
whom 21 underwent anatomic resection and 5
wedge resection.
